How to: Makeshift Indoor Photography Studio

    • 1). Set up studio space. If you have an empty room or a garage create a studio there. You can also use part of a room as long as you have space for your background and lighting equipment. Use an area with light colored, bare walls so they can serve as backgrounds as needed. If you choose a space with a lot of natural light, you might not need as many extra lights to create good looking photos.

    • 2). Set up backgrounds. A plain white sheet hung against a wall can make a simple and easy background for portraits or photos of inanimate objects. Add variety by using sheets in different colors or wall size posters of landscapes or cityscapes.

    • 3). Set up lighting. You will need a key light (or main light) and two background lights. You can use spot lights and floor lamps, or buy professional photography lights. If your studio space has a lot of natural lighting you might not need to use these lamps much. If the space is dark, or if you are taking more complex photographs than basic portraits, you might want to include more lighting equipment such as softboxes, reflectors and diffusers.
