A More Technical Glimpse at Wedding Photography
The pre-nuptials
Some couples do not fancy pre-nuptial shots (for financial reasons as well) but most wedding photography services and packages normally cover these anyway. The definition of pre-nuptials can even extend to the engagement shots, but this will depend on the agreement between the couple and the wedding photographers.
This is the most fun part in a wedding coverage since everyone is excited and nervous at the same time - people tend to goof around to release that pressure. For the couple though, pre-nuptial shots may reflect their emotional or intimate moments, still taking shots should be a fun and enjoyable experience. There are even different themes and motifs for pre-nuptial pictorials, you just need to let your creativity flow.
The exchange of vows
Indeed the most important part of traditional weddings is the solemn, sincere and and emotional exchange of vows. Others opt to scrap this part out or sometimes just include it in the reception program. This is one part that you would want to capture on film and video since the exchange of vows primarily is the essence of the entire wedding ceremony. Photo editors can have different approaches on how to add "magic" to this moment. While the traditional approach never fails, photojournalistic approach suggests more candid and consequently emotional shots. There are other approaches or options such as studio photography and the more contemporary fashion-based approach.
Wedding ceremonies differ from one culture to another, while others may take a couple of minutes others last for several hours. There are traditional weddings which have a complete entourage with various roles in the wedding proper (cord, veil and candle sponsors) thus each part they have should be documented as well. The location of the ceremony can often times be challenging for wedding photographers in taking pictures - proper lighting and a good background are big factors to consider. Of course the aim is to minimize the editing part and make the photographs look as natural as possible.
The reception
The traditional approach is more commonly used for post-wedding pictures since you would want formal and classic shots as keepsakes. The couple with their families, the entourage, guests and of course the traditional program (if applicable). Commonly, the reception place is designed in such a way that it will be more than fit for picture-taking. So there's hardly any problem with the photographic elements and all you need to worry about is projecting that smile as pleasing as possible.
By this time, wedding photography has evolved from the classic shots or portraits to digital images. Contact prints are firstly handed to the couple shortly after the wedding for them to choose and the final batch of pictures that will be blown up, or include in their wedding album. Now you see, wedding photography can be a really tiresome job.
