While it may not be 'new' news, it is certainly becoming 'forgotten' news that chlorine - while a giant step forward in terms of fighting the once-common water-borne diseases in the U.
S.
, presents health issues of its own.
Most of the nation's water supply is chlorinated and we often take it for granted that chlorine is 'safe'.
However, according to the new edition of the Bragg Water Book, (Bragg makes health food products and has been around for nearly 100 years), chlorination has its own issues.
Here is an excerpt from the new edition of the book: "Known carcinogens such as chloroform and other trihalomethanes are formed when chlorine reacts with organic compounds in the water.
These chorines accumulate in fatty tissue such as breast tissues and can be found in body fat, blood, mothers' milk and even semen.
Studies have implicated chlorinated drinking water with colorectal and bladder cancers.
Highly chlorinated water resulted in a noticeable shift in the transformation of cholesterol from beneficial HDL to harmful LDL.
" The book also cited a study, reported by the American Journal of Public Health, which surveyed 28,237 post-menopausal women.
"Those who drank water from municipal surface water sources consumed higher levels of chloroform than those who drank municipal ground water sources.
The higher intake of chloroform was associated with an increased risk of colon cancer, and of all cancers combined," the book stated.
The book also points out that chlorinated water also does not provide full protection against the deadliest organism in public water supplies.
Cryptosporidium, a toxic parasitic protozoan, is chlorine resistant and is inadequately removed by sand filters.
Household and drinking water filters and the use of distilled water are cited as safer alternatives to chlorinated water.
Costs of these cleaner water sources will most likely be more than off-set by the savings in health care costs over a lifetime, according to the book authors.
The new edition of the book, titled, WATER: The Shocking Truth! can be found at Bragg.

Here are some further drinking water statistics: 75 percent of Americans feel their drinking water is contaminated.
More than 10 percent of the nation's water supply does not meet federal health standards, which many feel are too low anyway.
There are more than 155,000 different drinking water systems operating within the U.
S.
More than 3.
4 million people -- mostly children -- die every year worldwide from drinking water contamination.
Distilled water is the most desirable and perhaps healthiest type of water to drink.
