How to Paint a Bathtub With Spray Paint

    • 1). Clean the tub. Any soap scum or lime scale present on your tub will prevent the paint from properly adhering. Start with a thorough scrub-down to ensure there is nothing between your paint and the tub it is intended to cover. After scrubbing down your tub, allow it to dry for at least 12 hours before painting.

    • 2). Ventilate the area. Spray paint generally lets off noxious fumes. To ensure that these fumes don’t get the best of you, turn on a fan and open your windows.

    • 3). Tape around the tub and lay drop cloths. Using painter tape, go around the perimeter of the tub to ensure your paint only hits the tub, not the walls that flank it. Also lay drop cloths around the room, protecting your flooring from paint.

    • 4). Apply two coats of epoxy paint. Spray on your first coat as evenly as possible, then allow the coat time to dry. After four to six hours, apply a second coat, again exercising caution to make the coat as even as possible.

    • 5). Finish by applying non-slip tape. Spray-painted tubs have a tendency to be slippery. To prevent this, place non-slip tape on the bottom of your tub, or select non-slip stickers in a color and shape that matches your decor to make this addition both utilitarian and attractive.
