How to Build & Link Excel Spreadsheets
- 1). Open Excel from the "Start" menu of your computer or from the desktop icon. A new workbook will automatically open for you.
- 2). Create headings for the categories that you need to include in your Excel spreadsheet. If you are keeping track of customers, for example, you may want to enter separate headings such as "First Name," "Last Name," "Street Address," "City," "State" and "Zip Code." These headings should be listed in the first row across the top of the spreadsheet, in cells "A1," "B1," "C1" and so on.
- 3). Enter all of the information you need to include in your spreadsheet under the appropriate headings. For example, type each customer's first name beneath the "First Name" heading and the customer's last name beneath the "Last Name" heading.
- 4). Use a separate row for each customer that you enter into the spreadsheet. Continue entering information until you have entered all of your data into the spreadsheet.
- 5). Make a second spreadsheet in the same workbook by clicking on one of the tabs at the bottom of the screen. Excel automatically opens to the spreadsheet in the first tab. You can also name these tabs to help keep track of which tab contains which data by right-clicking the tab, choosing "Rename" from the menu and entering a title for the tab.
- 1). Go to the tab that contains the spreadsheet with the data that you want to link to and click into the specific cell that contains the data to which you want to link. Click the "Copy" button in the toolbar to copy the information.
- 2). Switch to the tab that contains the spreadsheet that you want to create the link in. Right-click in the cell where you want to create a link and select the "Paste Special" option to bring up the "Paste Special" dialog box.
- 3). Click the radio button next to "Paste link" in the "Past Special" dialog box and click "OK." The data from the cell you copied in the other spreadsheet displays in the cell and any time the cell is changed in the other spreadsheet you have linked to, it automatically changes in the spreadsheet where the data has been pasted.
