    Funeral

    • The federal VA will pay $300 to a veteran's spouse or dependents to cover burial and funeral expenses. In addition, each Indiana county auditor can pay up to $1,000 for the burial of a veteran or his spouse as long as the veteran received an honorable discharge as defined by the Indiana Code. Veterans also have the right to be buried in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

    Tax Deductions

    • Veterans residing in Indiana can receive as much as $12,480 in property tax deductions on properties assessed at $143,160 or less, according to the Indiana Code as of April 2011, if they recorded at least 90 days of honorable service and suffer total disability or are at least 62 years of age and partially disabled due to military service. Indiana veterans qualify for either a $24,960 or $37,440 property tax deduction if they served in war time and became totally or partially disabled as the result or are 62 years of age with a partial disability due to that service. The state of Indiana allows veterans over the age of 60 to receive a $5,000 exemption on their Indiana income tax return as of April 2011.

    Education

    • The state of Indiana allows any honorably discharged veteran who received the Purple Heart and has a permanent address in the state to receive a full exemption for instate public college tuition fees for up to 124 credit hours. The children of honorably discharged veterans who have a service-related disability or received a Purple Heart can receive up to 124 free credit hours of instate tuition. The children of honorably discharged veterans who were killed in action while serving an active duty term in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq or Afghanistan also qualify for free instate tuition. In addition, the Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs offers free job or vocational training to any honorably discharged veteran.

    • The Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs can help Indiana veterans and their dependents fill out paperwork and file for federal benefits, such as medical and hospitalization, pension plans, retirement benefits, long-term hospice care, VA home loans, life insurance and employment assistance. Veterans can visit their county veterans' service officer for help determining their eligibility for federal benefits.
