    • 1). Go to the Breckenridge visitor information center on Main Street and pick up a free copy of the Breckenridge trail map.

    • 2). Dress in non-cotton clothing that will wick away moisture as you ride.

    • 3). Plan for safety. Wear a helmet and prepare for bright sunshine with sunscreen and sunglasses. Bring plenty of water, because you will dehydrate quickly in the dry mountain air.

    • 4). Talk to locals. There are many bike shops in Breckenridge staffed with knowledgeable riders who will point you toward trails you might not find otherwise.

    • 5). Choose a bike ride to suit your skill level. Beginners should try easier trails such as the Blue River Pathway, which follows a fairly flat path along the river, or the recreation path that leads to Frisco, nine miles north. Intermediate riders will love the Flume Trails, which fan out northeast of town, and Horseshoe Gulch, a gorgeous ride that starts off Tiger Run Road a few miles north of Breckenridge. For more of a challenge, try Baker's Tank off of Boreas Pass Road.

    • 6). Start early. Summer thunderstorms come up quickly in the mountains and often start shortly after noon.

    • 7). Take your time. Learning to mountain bike is much different than the sidewalk riding you did as a child, and if you push too hard you can hurt yourself.
