Avoiding dog health problems is more about doing the right things at the right time.
Right from the initial excitement when you get the puppy home to the final days, you will have to groom your dog to ensure it doesn't pass through troubled times.
There are various steps to make sure that your dog stays fit and healthy and isn't troubled by serious diseases.
One of the most important steps is to vaccinate your dog.
Routine shots when they are 6 to 8 weeks old and then boosters are necessary to maintain their immunity levels.
Follow up boosters are also given to pets in subsequent years to keep up the minimum levels of immunity required for the dog.
The most important vaccination is obviously for rabies which has to be given when the dog is between 3 to 6 months of age.
This has to be followed by a rabies booster every year.
Other diseases against which the dog has to be given vaccination routinely are canine distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza, adenovirus and coronavirus.
Apart from the vaccination, regular grooming will also help keep you dog in high spirits.
This would including brushing the pet and getting rid of parasites, regular shampoo and checking his body for lumps or other abnormal signs, trimming the nails, inspecting the pads for debris, cracks or even thickening, checking for cysts, checking the mouth, teeth and gums of the dog and cleaning the ears while looking for any signs of infestation or infection.
It is possible that you see brown residue, bleeding, mite infestation, foul smell or bad breath all of which indicate that something is wrong about the dog's health.
Worms and parasites often cause serious issues with the dog's health and cause a lot of pain.
So de-worming, flea and tick control are important steps to keep the dog free of any problems.
Internal parasites can leave the dogs short of nutrition due to which dogs turn scruffy and lose weight.
Internal bleeding also occurs because of these worms.
Worm infestation is often reflected through signs like dull, dry coat, worm segments, pot bellied appearance, excess weight loss, vomiting or diarrhoea.
Heartworm prevention helps to remove internal parasites from the pulmonary system of the dog and from the dog's heart.
Fleas too could prove to be a real menace and can affect the digestive system of the dog.
Ticks can transfer dangerous diseases like Lyme disease.
So the dog has to be groomed to avoid these.
