How to Restore a 1952 Chevy 3100 Truck Bed
- 1). Have the bed sides sanded and painted before installing the wood boards. Pay close attention to make sure that the bolt holes along the edges of the angle trim at the base of the sides and rear sill do not get too much paint, as extra thickness here will prevent a good fit and require extra sanding or prying to get them to fit.
- 2). Attach one side panel to the corner of the front bed panel using the bolts from the front bed panel mounting kit. Do the same with the remaining side panel. Leave the bolts slightly loose for adjustment. Install the rear sill of the bed, bolting it to the bottoms of the stake pockets with indented hex-head bolts and washers. This completes the box of the bed.
- 3). Start installing the boards at the outside edges. Slide the outside boards under the edge of the angle trim. Mark through the bolt holes onto the boards and drill a 3/8-inch hole for each bolt. Use a sharp bit for smooth holes. Secure the boards in place with the provided bolts -- again, leaving them slightly loose.
- 4). Fit the remaining boards and the bed strips (metal bolt strips) into the channel in the rear sill and under the edge of the angle trim along the front of the bed. Leave space between the boards for the bed strips, fitting their turned-down edges into the grooves in the bed boards. Bolt the ends of the boards through the lip of the rear sill, leaving the bolts loose.
- 5). Hoist the assembled bed box onto the frame of the truck, positioning the included wood spacers under the bed at the proper points indicated on the diagram that came with your bed kit. Attach the bed by locating and aligning the bed to frame bolt holes. Thread the bolts through, adding washers and nuts underneath. Tighten all bolts snugly at this point with an impact gun.
- 6). Align the bottom edge of the tailgate, if your truck has one, and slide the pins into the hinges, knocking them into place with a hammer. Oil the hinges and stand the tailgate upright, latching the chain at the top to hold it in place.
