Woodworking is a popular hobby for people all over the world. Woodworkers can be homebuilders, furniture makers or even wood carvers. Woodworking is ancient tradition, with skills that have been handed down from generation to generation. Although woodworking can be a highly rewarding pastime, it does have its dangers as well. - The most dangerous of all woodworking side effects is physical trauma to the body. Woodworkers employ a wide variety of large and powerful cutting tools. Many times, these blades can cut fingers, skin and even limbs.
- Despite the advent of air filters and masks, dust is a constant presence in any serious woodworking shop. Over time, woodworkers often are exposed to a steady stream of dust in the air. Dust can build up in the lungs and sinus cavities and cause chronic bronchitis, asthma and sinusitis.
- It is impossible for a woodworkers to cover all of their skin when working on a project. That is why dust, sap and wood oils often contact the skin and can cause irritation and even serious disease. Freshly cut wood and exotic wood tend to have a higher concentration of oils that can cause serious skin problems. Another cause of skin irritation among woodworkers can be the residual presence of pesticides in the wood.
