How to Peel a Shim

    • 1). Use a level or plumb line (this will depend on the project you are completing) to determine the thickness of the shim needed. Brace the level until the bubble is in the center and hold.

    • 2). Measure the gap created between the building surface and the base of the level when the bubble is centered in the level. This is the space where the shim is needed.

    • 3). Open the shim block to the desired thickness. It typically opens like a book.

    • 4). Peel away the unneeded portion of the shim block, tearing it easily along the hinge.

    • 5). Place the shim as needed to fill the gap and create a level measurement.
