How to Replace a Freeze Plug on a 1992 Ford Explorer
- 1). Park the Explorer on a firm, paved surface and set the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool off.
- 2). Place a drain pan under the drain valve on the radiator. Unscrew the drain valve and allow the coolant to drain into the pan. Close the drain valve.
- 3). Place a slotted screwdriver against the upper inside edge of the freeze plug and tap the screwdriver with a hammer. This will push in the top of the freeze plug. The bottom of the plug will rotate out. Grab the bottom of the plug with a pair of vise-grip pliers and work the plug out of the block.
- 4). Coat the outside rim of the new freeze plug with a non-hardening type gasket sealer. Place the plug against the hole in the engine block. Place a socket inside of the freeze plug. Tap the socket with a hammer to drive the plug into the hole in the engine block. Note: The socket should be as close to size of the inside of the freeze plug as possible.
- 5). Refill the engine with coolant. You can reuse your old coolant if it is still clean.
