How to Prevent Sciatic Nerve Pain
- 1). Practice good posture. When sitting, your feet should be flat against the floor with your elbows bent and your arms resting on the chair's arms. You should avoid overreaching with your back or legs.
- 2). Take frequent breaks. If you sit at a desk for extended periods of time, make sure you take the time to get up and walk around to prevent sciatica.
- 3). Plan to perform exercises that strengthen your back. Mild to moderate cardio activities can help prevent sciatic nerve pain. Spend 30 minutes at least 3 times a week on the treadmill, elliptical machine or stationery bicycle.
- 4). Adjust the clothing that you wear. Your shoes should fit properly and feel comfortable. Get measured for bras as well to ensure that they provide proper support.
- 5). Try to avoid lifting very heavy objects. Heavy lifting can lead to sciatica. If you do happen to lift something heavy, bend at the knees without relying on your back for momentum. Do not twist your waist while carrying something heavy.
- 6). Sleep on a firm mattress and avoid sleeping with too many pillows. When you lay on too many pillows, you will stretch your neck and back. Also, a firm mattress will provide support for your back.
