Donald Faison Talks About "Next Day Air
Donald Faison took time away from Scrubs for a lead role in Next Day Air, a comedy about the accidental delivery of 10 kilos of cocaine to the wrong apartment. Faison stars as Leo Jackson, a delivery guy who enjoys weed, even when he's supposed to be working. High on the job, Leo drops off the package to the wrong address, a hare-brained act that could cost him his life.
Faison says he's personally never been on the receiving end of a wrong delivery, but packages he's sent out for delivery have been lost a time or two.
"That's what's great about this movie," said Faison at the film's LA press day. "It’s very realistic, you know? Believe it or not people send drugs through the mail to their connections or to their employees. It’s something that we don’t talk about, but it’s something that goes down every day. Not only that, but the people who deliver your packages don’t give a crap about what's in the packages - no matter what you see."
Faison continued, "People do not care if it says fragile on it. I've sent stuff that said, 'Glass inside, please be careful,' wrapped it up in bubble wrap, a lot of bubble wrap to where the box with this thick, this big, and it got there and was cracked and broken and the box was all in a shambles and everything. So I know for a fact that they don’t care what's in that stuff."
Despite the occasional bad experience with couriers, Faison says this isn't his revenge on delivery companies. "It’s not my revenge. I mean no, hey, I get to poke fun at something that that the delivery service does but it’s not my revenge.
My revenge will be sweet, don’t you worry, when it comes," laughed Faison.
When asked about his favorite scene in the film, Faison, who was always interested in the role of Leo, said it was the one in which he gets to work opposite Mos Def. "He’s, in my opinion, all-world. He’s an activist, a rapper, a poet, an actor, he can sing a little, you know? The list goes on and I really admired him. I've known him for a while actually, too, since I was a kid. And so the best part of making...well the scene that I enjoyed doing the most was the scene where he and I got to interact."
"It was very natural. You know what I mean? It’s cool when you get to work with people you know," said Faison. "Like, I worked with Mike [Epps] before, I've worked with Wood [Harris] before and it’s always good to do stuff with the people you know."
