Remedy for Colic

There is no time in a mother's life happier and more joyful than when she first brings her baby home from the hospital. It can also be one of the most trying times too. Some babies experience an inconsolable fussy period daily starting around two to three weeks old. If your child's pediatrician has ruled out any health issue for your baby's crankiness, likely he or she will offer up the diagnosis of colic.

Colic is a generic term for unexplained crankiness in infants under 6 months old. It is characterized by crying, screaming and whole body stiffening alternating with the baby pulling his kneed toward his midsection. Some babies show stronger symptoms than others but regardless of the severity, it is very hard for the parents to watch helplessly as their baby seemingly suffers.

One tried and true remedy for colic is gripe water, a mixture of sodium bicarbonate, fennel and dill, given in a dropper. It is widely believed that the ingredients in gripe water relieve tummy pains, and while there is no scientific evidence to back the claim up, parents world-wide have used it for generations as an effective remedy for colic. Laying baby on your lap, belly down, and rubbing his back may also help to relieve some gas pains, which are associated with colic. If baby is pulling his knees up tightly then you can also lay him on his back and move his legs in a bicycle motion. This can also help relieve gas pains and, with your help, baby's knees will go further toward his abdomen and help dislodge any air trapped inside. Swaddling and holding your baby may offer up some relief, too.

Colic can feel like a helpless situation, but take heart that is does not last forever. Most babies will begin to show signs of waning colic symptoms around three months old. Take it day by day and when you begin to feel overwhelmed do not be afraid to ask for help or to put your baby in his crib and walk away for a few minutes to regain your confidence. Also remember that it is not your fault.

You cannot predict or prevent colic, but keep in mind that it in only temporary. When you begin to feel as though it will never go away, it does. Soon your little smiling baby will be colic free and you can really begin to enjoy parenthood the way you imagined.
