How to Paint on Black Velvet
- 1). Lay the fabric on the floor or a table face down with the stretcher bars face down on the fabric. Begin stapling the fabric to the wooden bars starting in the center and working your way to the edges, working all sides at the same time. Carefully fold the edges of the fabric before the final staples are attached so all corners look the same.
- 2). Draw out your design using a white chalk pencil.
- 3). Choose the colors you will use. Bright colors work the best, creating a contrast with the dark velvet.
- 4). Squeeze out your acrylic paint onto a palette. Use a dry brush to apply the paint directly to the canvas.
- 5). Wash out your brushes between colors and dry them off completely on a rag before starting a new color. Do not paint in areas that are black; allow the fabric to show through for a rich contrast.
