Head Lice Infestation and How to Deal With It!

A head lice infestation also known as pediculosis happens in childhood quite frequently.
This occurs when lice, which are hard to see, setup house on someone's head in the hair.
It used to be believed that this only happened when someone has bad hygiene.
Now experts agree that dirty or clean lice can invest anyone and of any age for that fact.
They multiply at an alarming rate so an infestation can very quickly spread throughout a school, family or anywhere else.
In her lifetime one female louse (singular form of lice) can lay as many as 150 eggs.
These oval eggs are a grayish-white color and resemble little pieces of sand stuck to the hair.
It takes a week or so for the eggs (nits) to hatch.
When an infestation occurs the scalp will become irritated and itch.
Often times the itching is worse overnight.
Diagnosing a head lice infestation consists of confirming the existence of the adults and the nits of lice.
Nits will stick to the hair unlike dandruff so this is how to test for them.
To treat the head lice infestation apply one of the many pediculicidal treatments that are on the market today.
These can be in aerosol, crème-rinse, or shampoo form.
These treatments are designed to kill the lice and the nits when applied properly.
It usually takes more than one application to accomplish this.
Ask and pharmacist or doctor for the treatment that will work best.
Some of the treatments can be bought in the drugstore without prescription, while other treatments have to be prescribed.
There is a special comb with fine teeth for removing the nits.
After you apply the treatment and rinse it off you take the fine-tooth comb and gently comb through the hair.
Be patient this could take as long as two hours.
This has to be done though to keep the hair from getting another infestation.
Everything the person has been using who has the head lice infestation must also be disinfected.
Lice can survive at least 2 days off the host's scalp.
The eggs can live as long as 2 weeks.
So this is why any personal products such as brushes and combs have to be disinfected, along with all bed clothing and bedding that have come in contact with the infested person.
Even hats, hair accessories, scarves, and towels need disinfecting.
Things will have to be washed in hot water and dried thoroughly in the hot cycle of your clothes dryer.
There is special disinfectant for combs and brushes in which they need to be soaked it after it is mixed with hot water.
In families it is best to treat everyone to make sure others do not get the infestation.
As time consuming as this all is it is worth getting rid of the head lice infestation once and for all.
