How to Increase Figs' Growth
- 1). Measure the length of the fig's branches in late winter to early spring before the tree breaks dormancy. Do not measure every single branch. Select a sample from different sections of the tree. Tie ribbons around them to mark which ones you measured. Take note of the average length in the sample you chose. Measure the same branches again after the growing season ends. If the average growth rate for the summer was less than 12 inches, feed the tree in the spring to increase its growth.
- 2). Measure ½ lb. 10-10-10 fertilizer. This analysis contains 10 percent each nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
- 3). Apply the fertilizer uniformly around the tree by hand in early spring. Do not let the product touch the trunk, to prevent burn.
- 4). Water the tree to the root zone to move the fertilizer into the soil.
- 5). Repeat Step 1 at the end of every growing season. Repeat Steps 2 to 4 the following spring if the tree's growth was not satisfactory the previous year.
