How to Housebreak a Yorkie
- 1). Set consistent outdoor potty times and stick to them. In particular, your Yorkie needs a chance to go outside as soon as she wakes up and as soon as you get home from work. Try to take your Yorkie outside at least once every two hours during the initial training period.
- 2). Praise your Yorkie lavishly and reward her with a treat or a toy when she goes in the proper place.
- 3). Reprimand indoor potty accidents with a sharp, clear "No!", but only if caught in the act or immediately afterward. Your Yorkie won't connect a "No!" given after the fact with the original misdeed.
- 4). Try using a crate as a training aid. Any dog--including a Yorkie--is less likely to relieve itself in its sleeping space. So watch your Yorkie for signs that it needs to get outside constantly. When it's not possible to watch your Yorkie, put it in the crate and make sure it gets out for frequent potty breaks.
