- Launch the App Store application on the iPhone by tapping its icon on the home screen. Tap the "Search" button in the menu at the bottom of the screen and type "Skype" into the "Search" box. Tap the entry for the Skype app in the search results, followed by the "Install" button. Tap the button again to confirm download and installation of the official Skype application on your iPhone.
- Before you can use Skype on the iPhone, you must sign into the Skype network. If you already have a Skype account, enter your username in the "Skype Name" box and your password in the "Password" box. If you don't have a Skype account, tap the "Create Account" button, followed by the "Accept" button and enter the requested details including your name, desired Skype name, password and email address. An email will be sent to verify the account setup, after which your new Skype account will be active on the iPhone.
- Once you sign in, the iPhone's Skype application will load any existing contacts associated with your account into its "Contacts" section. Tap the "Contacts" button to view your list of contacts, and tap an entry to bring up their full details. Tap the "Call" button to initiate a Skype call with the contact, and hold the iPhone to your ear as if you were making an ordinary cellphone call. As long as the iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network and you're calling another Skype user, you will incur no charge for making the call.
- The Skype network also allows you to make video calls with any other Skype user equipped with a webcam or device with a forward-facing camera. The iPhone 4, iPod touch 4 and iPad 2 all have forward-facing cameras, allowing you to make free video calls between the devices using the Skype application, whenever you're connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. The instant messaging service built into Skype is also available through the iPhone app, allowing you to send and receive text messages with other Skype users.
