Fashion Vs Chiropractic Comfort

Looking good may not always be the best thing for you health-wise.
Many people today are very conscious about following the latest trends - even at the expense of one's comfort.
Your look may be one-of-a-kind, but oftentimes, it is not even comfortable.
The season's look coming straight from the runway usually includes high heels, short skirts, tight pants, and a slew of accessories.
However, did you know that these popular looks can create pain and problems in your leg, back, spine, or neck? In reality, women are not just walking down a catwalk; they are walking down the street or racing to work in 5-inch heels and a 2-ton bag, and unaware of how they are treating their bodies.
Women usually wear high heels to enhance an outfit, but are not realizing that these shoes can cause major discomfort for the feet and can intensify back pain.
High heels alter the natural balance of the body and create a new dynamic equilibrium that the musculoskeletal system in the body has to adapt to.
Basically, when high heels are worn for an extended period of time, the pelvis is tipped forward and the normal curvature of the spine is adjusted to maintain a center of gravity.
When a person is standing flat-footed, the body is completely balanced.
However, when high heels are worn, the hamstrings are taught and the pelvis is used to stabilize the balance.
Both men and women fall into the fashion trap.
However, it is usually women that tend to wear tight clothes.
Tight mini-skirts and tight pants may look good, but are too constricting.
They cause simple motions such as bending, sitting, and walking to become difficult to do.
They also throws the body off balance since a person is not moving comfortably, resulting in poor posture and possibly the misalignment of the spine.
Another unhealthy fashion habit is carrying big heavy purses, backpacks, or handbags.
Many people tote around heavy bags which weigh more than 10 percent of your body weight.
When a heavy bag is carried over one shoulder, it causes the spine to curve towards that shoulder, and there is an unnatural counterbalance movement in your shoulders.
A common practice, mostly by men, is to carry their wallets in the back pockets.
Not only is it unnecessary to carry extra weight, it is also detrimental for your spine to sit on an object for an extended period of time.
Although it is important to be fashionable, there ways to chose clothes, shoes, and bags that are both comfortable and stylish.
Here are some tips to look and feel your best!
  • Choose shoes that are comfortable for standing and walking.
If you have to wear high heels, bring some flat shoes that you can change into.
For your everyday shoes, wear supportive footwear that is comfortable to walk in that will evenly distribute your body-weight.
  • Don't wear clothes that are excessively tight.
If you prefer fitted clothing, choose pieces that allow you to do everyday tasks easily.
  • Carry a bag with adjusting straps and remember to frequently switch the side on which you are carrying the bag.
Make sure to take out unnecessary "stuff" from your purse and place objects that you often use (phone, wallet, etc.
) in easy to reach pockets.
Keep in mind, designers care more about how clothing looks rather than how it functions or feels.
It is up to you to choose what is both fashionable and comfortable.
