How to Knit a Kerchief
- 1). Place one loop on a knitting needle. Knit two stitches through that loop. Turn the work. Knit one stitch, pick up one stitch from the previous row and knit one stitch. Turn the work. Knit one stitch, pick up one stitch from the previous row, knit one, pick up one and knit the last stitch. You now have 5 stitches on the needle.
- 2). Knit one stitch, pick up one stitch and knit across until only one stitch is left on the holder needle. Pick up one stitch from the previous row and knit the last stitch. Continue with this increase method until you have 31 stitches on the needle. It should form a triangle as you knit.
- 3). Knit one stitch, pick up one stitch and knit it, then knit 14 more stitches. Purl one stitch, knit on across, pick up one stitch and knit the last stitch. Knit one, pick up one and knit it, knit across and do the last increase. Turn the work. Knit one, increase one, knit 14 stitches, purl three stitches, knit across and increase at the next-to-last stitch. Continue working in this way: Use increases on the edge, knit 14, purl across to the edge of the last purl and add one more purled stitch, then knit the rest of the way and increase on the last stitch.
- 4). Knit in this pattern until you have made a wide triangle of knitted fabric with a garter stitch edge 15 stitches wide, and a wedge of plain knit in the middle. Crochet the stitches off the knitting needle, snip the thread and pull it through the last loop. Crochet a 6-inch chain, then single crochet across the top edge of the kerchief, and crochet a 6-inch chain on the other side.
