How to Fill Out a Source Card
- 1). Read the guidelines for the research you are doing in terms of formatting. While some faculties use APA, others use MLA or Chicago style. If you are unfamiliar with the style guides, read a book about the one you will be using. Use the same formatting style for the source cards as in the research report.
- 2). Organize your research in terms of books, journals and websites, along with other materials. Begin your sourcing with pre-existing research, and add new source cards as new research surfaces.
- 3). Fill out each source card with one reference. If you are doing the source cards on the computer, use half a page for one source and add a separation line between each source to keep it organized.
- 4). Write the full bibliographical content of each source on each card. Write it in the formatting style chosen in Step 2. Include the author's last name, first name, title of the work, place of publication, year of publication and exact page numbers, if applicable.
- 5). Provide 5 to 10 short points about the source written in point form. Identify what the source is about, how it is relevant to your research, how you can use the research in terms of your hypothesis or thesis and what section of your research the source can be used.
- 6). Write down the location of the source, such as a web address, a library call number and reference numbers. Include this information in case the research needs to be found quickly at a later date.
