Is Charcoal Grilling Harmful To Your Health?

Quite a long ago before the propane or gas barbecues were first developed and then stretching far back into the history, man has been cooking his food on the open flame.
Initially wood was used but after that we started using the charcoal briquettes in the barbecues.
So now, we want to know as to how safe this charcoal grilling actually is? Apart from the usual concerns about the carbon monoxide poisoning, you must never use the grill in the enclosed areas to avoid any health risks occurring from the particulate matter which is released from the charcoal.
It is a fact that both charcoal and wood produce lot of harmful gases while burning-they actually release the small soot particles which can be dangerous to the people with lung and heart problems.
This soot also pollutes the environment.
Another important side effect of using the charcoal or wood is that this grilling of the meat generates two kinds of carcinogens- HCA (heterocyclic amines) and PAH (or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons).
As per the American Cancer Society (ACS), HCAs are formed when the fat drips on the charcoal briquettes from the meat.
This may rise with the smoke and deposit on the food.
The HCAs are also formed on the pan-fried and boiled pork, beef, fish and foul and not just on the grilled meats.
The researchers at the National Cancer Institute have successfully identified the 17 different HCAs which are formed as a result of the cooking of the muscle meats and pose grave cancer risks to the humans.
In Canada these charcoal briquettes are now a days considered as a hazardous product and now fall under HPA (Hazardous Products Act) which implies that the charcoal briquettes which are imported, advertised or even sold in the Canada should clearly display the label which warns of the potential hazards associated with this product.
Though the hazards may be associated with the grilling on charcoal, you can as an alternative use the natural charcoal.
While it is a fact that no extensive and in-depth research is found on the health hazards associated with the charcoal grilling, as many people today are very conscious about their body and health, it is therefore much better to use those products which lessen such risks to your health.
