The Best Way to Weather Strip Doors

    Measure The Door

    • Measure the door frame from the outside with a tape measure. Measure the top of the door first and then measure both side jambs. Add 1 inch to each measurement so you know you will have enough weatherstripping. Measure the bottom of the door from the inside. You will be adding a sweep that attaches to the door. Open the door and tighten the hinges with a screwdriver. If you find you have loose hinges, have a helper lift up on the handle end of the door while you tighten the screws.
Go to the hardware store and purchase a weather strip kit for your door. Rigid metal strips with a flexible weather strip flap are ideal for weatherstripping your door. These eliminate the need to cut around hinges and door latches. It is also a good idea to purchase the self-adhesive foam weather strip that fits inside the door jamb. You will also need to pick up a door sweep for the bottom of the door.

Weather Strip The Top and Sides

    • Cut the top metal weather strip first. Measure and mark the metal portion of the weather strip and cut the metal with a hacksaw. Use a pair of scissors to cut the vinyl flap. Position the metal portion of the weather strip on the door frame header with the vinyl against the door. The vinyl should fold across the door at a slight angle. Tack the header weather strip in place with the supplied nails and a hammer. Measure the side jambs again and transfer the measurements to the two side jamb weather strip pieces. Cut the metal portion with the hacksaw and cut the vinyl with scissors. Position each weather strip piece on the jamb with the vinyl slightly folding to the door. Nail both pieces in place.
Open the door and clean the inside jamb with a warm cloth and dry thoroughly. Measure and cut a piece of the self-adhesive foam weather strip roll and press the foam against the doorstop portion of the door jamb. The doorstop is where the door closes into the jamb. Cut pieces of foam for the two jambs as well and press them against the doorstops. Now you have a weather-tight seal around the jambs and the header of your door.

    Install a Door Sweep

    • Measure and cut the door sweep according to the measurement you took earlier of the bottom of the door. Position the door sweep on the bottom of the door from the inside with the door closed. Position the sweep so the sweep just touches the door sill. Mark the attaching holes to the door with a pencil.
Pre-drill holes for the door sweep and attach screws with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Set the door sweep back onto the back of the door and secure the sweep with the retaining screws.
