How to Build an Indian Long House
- 1). Cut seven pieces of wire 20 inches long. Bend the wires into a half-circle. Make the frame of your building by placing the arcs of wire 2 inches apart down the length of a 1-by-2-foot piece of styrofoam. They should be perpendicular to the long sides of the foam. Start 6 inches from the short end and push the wire into the foam as you would push croquet hoops into the ground. The wire should be pushed 1 inch into the foam. You will have an archway of wire. This is the frame for your building.
- 2). Cut a 32-inch piece of wire. Leave 12 inches of the wire in the center straight, but curve 10 inches at each down. Place this wire over the center of the row of arches. Push the ends of this wire into the foam near the center of the short sides. This will be the ridge pole of the longhouse.
- 3). Cut seven more 20-inch pieces of wire and one more 32-inch piece of wire. Set them aside. Cover the frame with strips of bark or paper. When one section is covered, use the arcs of wire to hold the paper or bark in place. Push them in over the bark just as you did previously. Cover the entire building
- 4). Cut a doorway in one end of the building. It should be 3 inches tall. Cut three smoke holes along the top of the building. They should each be 1-inch square.
