Repair of Vinyl Window Sashes
- 1). Raise the bottom sash a few inches, and then press in on the vinyl jamb liner to pull the top of the window out toward you. Lift one side up and remove the sash from the window.
- 2). Lower the top sash halfway down the jamb. Press down on the jamb liner and bring the top sash into a horizontal position. Lift one end of the window and lift the sash out.
- 3). Insert a screwdriver into the locking mechanism in the vinyl track, which is balanced properly, and twist the screwdriver clockwise to release the prawl. This releases tension in the balance. Slide the locking mechanism up slowly, holding it with the screwdriver, until it reaches the bottom of the balance cartridge in the track.
- 4). Remove the jamb liner by sliding a putty knife between the window stop and the vinyl track. Pry the putty knife outward to remove the track.
- 5). Slide the bad balance cartridge out of the liner by removing the cap from the end with a screwdriver, then sliding the balance out.
- 6). Install a new locking terminal in the bad cartridge by clamping the cartridge tight in a vise. Pull out 6 to 8 inches of the cord inside the cartridge, and then clamp the cord with a pair of locking pliers to hold it in place. Lock the pliers at the cartridge to prevent the cord from slipping back in. Thread the cord through the new locking mechanism and tie a knot in the cord. Release the pliers and let the cord go slowly back inside. Slide the cartridge back in the liner and reassemble the window.
