Top Electrical Safety Concerns
- Never run an electrical cord under a rug. The cord may short out and start a fire. Also do not use electrical cords with frayed or exposed wires because they could be a fire hazard, and they could shock a person or pet who comes in contact with them.
- Never overload an electrical outlet, a power strip or an extension cord beyond the wattage and amps it was designed to handle. This could result in a fire.
- According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, it is unsafe to use an extension cord on major appliances. Extension cords are not designed to handle the consistent current generated by larger appliances, which makes them a fire hazard.
- Check outlets frequently for burn marks on the cover and to make sure the cover is not cracked or missing. If you find burn marks, contact an electrician. If a cover is cracked or missing, replace it.
- Dry off your children and yourself before entering your house after a rain or after swimming in a pool, as suggested by SafetyEd.org. There is potential for electrical shock if you touch a home appliance, such as a toaster or hair dryer, while your body is still wet.
