So you've just jumped into the wacky yet profitable world of entrepreneurship.
Great.
That was a smart move for you and your family.
As unpredictable as the job market is these days, it's important to have a Plan B.
Running a business requires different skills and principles.
This article will give you some important principles to adopt if you want to run a successful small business.
Principle #1 - You must have tenacity.
Things will not always go according to plans.
Your child will get seriously ill on the same day you have the interview with the local newspaper.
Your printer will die right when you are completing an order for your biggest client.
Your main client will decide they no longer need your services the day before they are supposed to renew their contract.
You need tenacity to keep smiling and keep on making progress in your business when it seems like the world is closing in on you.
Principle # 2 - You need focus.
When you start a small business you will be presented with a lot of "opportunities".
The reason I put that word in quotation marks is because what seems like a good opportunity might take too much attention away from your main objective.
When you start a small business you need to decide what your core area of expertise is going to be and only accept projects that complement that area.
Even though an opportunity sounds profitable, you have to learn how to analyze the opportunity and see if it matches what you are already doing.
If it doesn't match your long term goal, you will have to learn how to say no.
Principle #3 - You need a thick skin to run a successful business.
Everyone in your life won't be excited for you when you start running your own business.
Be prepared to hear "When are you going to get a REAL job?" quite often from your friends and family.
You will have to keep on going even though you don't have the support of your family.
It will help if you get hooked up with some other small business owners in your area.
They can provide you with the support you need.
The most important thing to do is to know that you are the best at what you do.
Working from home can be a profitable and rewarding experience.
It can also be stressful.
However if you surround yourself with supportive and competent people, you'll have a successful and sustainable business before you know it.
