How to Lift a Piano With a Rope & Pulley

    • 1). Determine what you're going to use for the main support. This needs to be a beam strong enough to support the piano when it is dangling in midair. Bolt the block and tackle to this beam and run the rope through the pulleys.

    • 2). Lay the straps on the ground underneath the piano. Four straps laid in a tic-tac-toe pattern will provide the most stable support. Attach rope to the ends of each strap and attach these ropes to the lower pulley. Close the piano's lid, if it is open.

    • 3). Pull the lifting-rope until it is taut, and the straps are tight against the bottom of the piano. Adjust the straps to make sure they're evenly distributed along the bottom of the piano, making sure that the instrument will be well-balanced and evenly supported.

    • 4). Lift the piano slowly by hauling on the rope. The amount of force required to do this will vary depending on the type of pulley system you are using. Most pianos weight close to 1000 pounds. A gun tackle system cuts the force required in half, which means you'll need to exert 500 pounds of pull, while a threefold purchase tackle gives a mechanical advantage of 6, which means only about 130 pounds of pull will be required. Having muscular assistants is a plus.
