How to Choose Dental Coverage

    • 1). Determine how much you can afford to pay for dental coverage. More inexpensive plans will be more simple and offer less in terms of coverage, excluding major procedures, certain X-rays and diagnostic processes. Plans that cost more will cover more services and procedures and may offer a larger network of dentists from which to choose.

    • 2). Inquire about the coinsurance percentages. Most medical plans -- dental included -- only pay up to a certain percentage of the cost of services. The average, according to the All Insurance Info website, is between 70 and 80 percent. Then, in addition to your copay and monthly premium, you will be responsible for the remainder of the bill amount.

    • 3). Figure out what copay you can afford to pay. Like most types of insurance, you need to pay a copay when you visit the dentist. When you look over different plans, it is important to gauge the amount of the copay versus the services offered. For a lower copay, you may have to choose a plan that costs more annually, if you need regular dental work or have a family plan.

    • 4). Research the dentists in your area that accept the type of insurance you are interested in purchasing. Not all dentists even accept insurance, so check with your dentist to see what kinds of insurance she takes and what her policies are regarding the filing process. If your dentist does not accept insurance, you may have to file yourself for reimbursement.
