About.com Rating

Comodynes tanning towelettes promise natural and uniform color. While the odor isn't nearly as bad as other sunless tanners, these 8 inch by 8 inch towelettes dry quickly as you apply the product and lead to a more streaky tan than other towelettes on the market. Within six hours, a golden brown tan was achieved, though, and the streaks were less visible.

Comodynes Tanning Towelettes

I've tried them all -- sunless tanning lotions, sprays, gels, towelettes, even pills that promised me a natural glow. I've been orange. Streaky. Smelled bad. Ruined my clothes.

Or I've had nothing happen at all.
I was intrigued by the Comodynes tanning towel demonstrations I saw on TV. Wipe on your tan, get dressed immediately and show off your tan in 3 hours? That's for me!

For my test, the right side of my body was untouched to show my natural skin color. The Comodynes towelettes were only used on the left side. I carefully rubbed the towelette over my right elbow, ankle and knee to avoid the splotches sunless tanners tend to leave on your joints.

Within 10 minutes, I was dressed and going about my day. I didn't feel greasy or stinky.

I purposely wore a white tank top to see if this product would rub off on my clothes. It didn't.

There is an odor to this product you'll recognize if you've used any sunless tanner before. But the Comodynes towelettes have the least offensive smell of the sunless tanners I've tried ... and I've tried everything from the priciest brands to the types you find in the drugstore.

Within three hours of the Comodynes towelette application, I could see a slight difference in my skin. But only on my leg. My left arm and right arm looked the same, even though I began applying the towelette on my left arm before moving on to my left leg.

Unfortunately, I also saw streaks appearing on my calf, ankle and knee. By the sixth hour, my legs showed a visible golden brown color and the streaks were less noticeable. My left arm's tan was barely there. See the before and after pictures at the top of the page to view the results.

By day four, the tan was almost completely gone. The Comodynes instructions advise you to reapply every four days to maintain your tan.

It's important to note the product reacts differently with people's skin types. Like other sunless tanning towelettes, you may try the product and turn orange. This is what happened when I tried the Tantowel brand. However, Comodynes resulted in a golden brown tone for me.

Smell is always a factor in my decision to like or dislike a sunless tanning product. The Comodynes towelettes do have a slight odor to them, but the smell is the least offensive of the self tanning products I've tried.

Unlike other self tanners, the odor disappeared after a shower. I've tried many sunless tanners that I can smell for days after I've applied them, no matter how many showers I take.

If the streaks had not appeared, the Comodynes tanning towelettes would have jumped to a 4 1/2 star rating. The other half star would have been earned with no odor at all from the towelette.

The sunless tanning market is flooded with products. I've yet to find the perfect tanning towelette after more than 20 years of trying virtually every sunless tanner available. But despite the flaws of the Comodoynes tanning towelettes, the mix of a nice golden brown color and a less offensive smell than other self tanners save the towelette from the do not buy list.

Start with the 8 pack to see how these towelettes work with your skin. It's the cheapest option for newcomers to try the towelette without spending a small fortune. The 8 pack won't last long if you like them, but spending about $50 on a large pack will be a waste of money if the chemical reaction turns your skin orange or the towelette's odor bothers you too much.
