Losing weight is more then just cutting foods out of our diets, and reducing calorie intake, although diets like us think otherwise. Without fully understanding how our bodies work, and why we gain weight, lose weight, and what our bodies do with food, we cannot begin to make the required lifestyle changes for long term weight loss. Just as an example, did you know that if you cut to many calories from your diet to quickly you will actually hold onto more body fat? When our bodies feel as they might be being starved we go into preservation mode, causing us to hold onto body fat as a reserve.

Don't be a salve to the diet

A lot of people might not agree with this, they might think but you have to be committed to the diet for it to work. The reality is don't let the diet control you. You still need to be healthy, and losing weight isn't worth damaging your health over. Dieting is actually a big cause of why people quickly gain back the weight they lose, causing them to diet again, then gain back etc. This is known as the yo-yo effect.

Because when we begin to lose fat from dieting, we also begin to lose muscle mass. You can see why this could become a problem I'm sure, especially if you gain back the weight you lose. When you gain back weight after a diet, you don't get the muscle back, so it's important to exercise consistently while your own a diet to maintain the amount of muscle you have. Other wise you can find yourself in a difficult situation a few months down the road.

Build Muscle

To ensure you're not just whittling away your muscle and belly fat it's important to exercise regularly and consistently when you're dieting. Walking is good, but getting into some higher impact workouts at home (you don't need equipment) will ensure that you're maintaining muscle mass, and cutting away the fat.

Simple exercises are the answer

You don't need an expensive gym membership to keep your muscle mass. Activities like yoga and pilates give your body a good over all workout, and help build strength. We're not talking about bulking up, but you should maintain a consistent work out schedule. Getting an at home pilates dvd or aerobic video you can do a few times a week is a good idea, couple that with walking or a jog every few days and you should be fine.

Weight Loss doesn't happen over night

It's human nature for us to be excited and motivated to start something like a new diet. How ever our confidence, excitement, and discipline often dwindle when we don't see the results we had been told about in the diets descriptions. The fact is this is the difficulty with dieting, we're promised the moon and stars, and all we can get is a telescope. Aiming for lifestyle changes and a solid healthy eating and exercise routine will bring your greater results that will last a lifetime. So don't spend any more time on the yo-yo, get started today on the path to a healthier you.
