Purchase healthy citrus trees from reputable nurseries. Look for trees that have bright, full foliage, healthy wood and no breakage or disease. Buying healthy trees from the start will ensure better growing success.

Choose the right site for citrus trees. All citrus trees need warmth, full sun and good drainage. Do not plant trees in any area that puddles. Standing water damages fruit trees.

    • 3). Till your chosen site with a blend of half compost and half quick-draining soil to produce the nutritious, quick-draining foundation that citrus trees need. Turn over the top 3 feet of soil and mist it with your compost and potting soil combination.

    • 4). Dig a hole twice as big as the root ball of your citrus tree, in both width and depth. Fill it halfway in with the soil mixture for good drainage underneath and to the sides of the tree. Put the tree in its hold and make sure that the junction of root to trunk sits at soil level. Pack the soil firmly over the roots.

    • 5). Plant citrus trees at least 5 feet away from each other to give them plenty of space. Water citrus trees regularly to keep the soil consistently moist. Fertilize as per the requirements of your specific citrus.

    • 6). Mulch all citrus trees with at least 4 inches of organic mulch in winter, before the first frost, to protect them from freezing temperatures.
