How to Fix the Windows User Profile
- 1). Create a new user profile. Click on "Start," select "Control Panel" and if "User Accounts and Family Safety" is an option select it, then click on "User Accounts" and "Add a New Account." Provide password information if necessary, then select "Create a New Account." Type a name and select an account type. Then click "Create Account."
- 2). Copy the files from the old profile to the new one. You will need three accounts on the computer to do this. First, the one you are copying from, then the one you are copying to finally, the one you log in to to launch the copy commands. Log in to the third user. Click the "Start" button and click on "Documents." Select "Tools" then click on "Folder Options." Press "Alt" if you do not see the "Tools" menu. Select "View," then "Show hidden files," then clear the check box for "Hide protected operating system files," then click "OK."
- 3). Locate the corrupt user file and the new user folders. Look for the user name in the drive where Windows is installed under the "user" directory. An example of this would be C:\Users\UserName. Select all the files EXCEPT Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log and Ntuser.ini. Copy and paste these files into the new user folder. Log off and log in as the new user.
