How to Obtain a Copy of a Marriage Certificate in New York City
Instructions
Bride or Groom
1Go to the City Clerk's Office, located at 141 Worth Street, New York, NY, 10013. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
2
Request an application form from the staff. To receive your marriage certificate, you must complete a form that requires personal information regarding your wedding. All information must be completed before returning the form.
3
Return the application and present a proper identification to the staff, as well as payment. Identification is required to verify you are the bride or groom. The cost to retrieve a copy of your marriage certificate is $15 and $10 for each additional copy. The City Clerk only accepts payment in the form of a money order or credit card. The money order should be made out to The City Clerk.
Persons Other Than the Bride or Groom
1Retrieve a letter from the bride or groom, authorizing you to retrieve the marriage certificate. The letter should include the date, City Clerk's address, a statement from the bride or groom, their printed name and signature, and your printed name.
2
Get the letter notarized. You must be present, as well as the bride or groom. Notarizing services are available at most banks. You cannot issue the City Clerk's Office a copy or fax of the notarized letter; it must be the original copy.
3
Return the letter. The letter must be returned to the City Clerk's Office with a money order or debit card payment. Proper identification is required to verify the notarized letter as well as your identity.
