Checkered Flag

• Create a checkered racing flag by creating a checkered pattern on a piece of plain white paper with a ruler and black marker. Attach the flag to a paper towel tube for play or onto a painted dowel stick for decorating a little racer's bedroom wall. Make other racing flags in the same way and set up your own race track for hours of play.
  
  

Race Car Checkers

• Turn white cardstock into a checkered racing flag with makers and a ruler. Use small toy cars as playing pieces and create a racing-themed checkers game. Divide toy cars into two different colored teams so players can easily recognize their playing pieces.
  
  

Cupcake Toppers

• Cut small flags out of white paper and create a black checkered pattern on them with a ruler and a marker. Attach the paper flags to toothpicks to use as cupcake decorations.
  
  

Flag Bookmark

• Cut out a 2-by-6-inch piece of white paper. Create a checked pattern with black marker on the front side of the paper. Glue this paper to a slightly wider and longer piece of cardstock in a coordinating color. Use race car stickers across the front and glue the words "Readers are Winners" onto the checkered front. Punch a hole at the top of the bookmark and attach a piece of yarn for decoration.
