Camping Holidays - What to Look for in a Camping Park

Finding a campsite There is so much choice, and looking for a campsite can be daunting if you are new to camping, but even for the experienced it can be a challenge.
Decide what you are looking for If you are camping for the first time, make a list of what you would like from the campsite.
Maybe ask friends and family that camp to get some ideas.
Google something like campsites/ caravan parks/ tenting inthe county of your choice.
It is interesting to read campsite reviews, and this will help you to make your selection and decide what facilities you require from a park.
  • Will you be happy on a very quiet park with basic facilities?
  • Is your choice a 5 star park with every modern amenity?
  • Or will you decide on something in between?
Do watch out for parks that appear very cheap, because you will often have to pay for showers etc.
and may find that a more expensive park actually turns out to be better value for money.
Consider a Graded Park At a modern quality graded park (Google VisitBritain for full details on grading) you can expect all or some of the following:
  • Facilities -Modern, up to date facilities with under floor and/or central heating in the showers & toilets
  • Laundry - washing machines, tumble dryers, irons etc
  • Kitchen - washing up sinks, microwaves, fridge, freezer
  • Play areas - often a separate playground for under 5's, and another for older children
  • Games room - table tennis, skittle ally, pool table, air hockey, television etc.
  • Facilities for very young children - your children are never too young to camp if you choose a park with the right facilities.
  • Park shop - this may be a convenience for sweets, beer, wine, ice creams and those little necessities we forget or a well-stocked mini market.
Most parks sell fresh bread and newspapers.
  • Eating in or out - restaurant or café nearby, as well as being close to local takeaways.
  • Swimming pool - indoor and/or outdoor pools can be nice at certain times of the year, although often very small and busy in high seasons.
  • Entertainment - Many parks have bars, bingo and discos on site, where as others are more geared towards a quiet, peaceful, relaxing environment.
Pitch sizes - size IS important Hikers, cyclists and sometimes 2 people with a 2 man tent and car will find a 7 - 9 metre pitch quite satisfactory, and this will often be cheaper.
If you have a big tent you will need large pitch for comfort and safety - if you tent is over 8 metres including guy ropes or you have a large caravan with awning then you will need to book a large pitch.
If you change your tent or caravan after making an advanced booking, do let the park know about this.
Remember to contact them as you will not be able to use a 10 metre pitch if you have changed to a larger tent or caravan.
Type of pitch usually available include:
  • Grass pitches with or without electric
  • Basic hard standing pitches with electricity
  • Fully serviced pitches, often called a "premier" pitch.
Include electricity, water and chemical toilet emptying facilities.
Other considerations
  • Pet friendly parks will welcome your pet and provide suitable facilities.
  • An adult's only park for those without children will mean that couples wanting a quiet holiday are not disturbed by boisterous youngsters.
  • A family park, usually with some of the facilities listed above will mean that your children can have hours of outdoor fun, often spending very little and return to your tent or caravan happily tired and ready for a good night's sleep (you hope).
Family camping is what happy childhood memories are made of!
  • Quiet park or entertaining, lively parks.
The choice is yours, however many parks ask you to be quiet from 10pm and no noise at all after 11pm.
Look at park information and see what will suit you best.
