Pros and Cons of Having a Rooster
- One of the main reasons to keep roosters is so that you have the ability to have fertilized eggs. Of course in order to have fertilized eggs you need to also have chickens. If you are setting forth to have both chickens that are already mature as well as chicks that can be raised into adult roosters or chickens, then you will want to have adult roosters around.
- If you like to be wakened early in the morning, like people who live on a farm do, then roosters are a fantastic way to do that. Some believe that roosters crowing in the morning is an old wives' tale, and while they may not crow as often as some think, they will begin the morning with a crow from time to time. If you or your neighbors have a problem with that, this can quickly go from a positive to a negative.
- Chickens and roosters do not necessarily need any kind of special housing if you live in temperate climates. If you live in areas that can get quite cold, or if there are predators in your area, you will need to build a chicken coop for the roosters and hens to reside in at night. The problem with keeping roosters and hens at home can be that some cities and towns do not allow poultry and other livestock to be kept inside their borders.
- Roosters are not like other animals like dogs or cats. You don't need to spend time rushing home in order to feed a rooster. Roosters can have feed laid out for them once a day and then be left to their own devices. There are, of course, drawbacks to having to set aside money in your budget for feed.
