How to Configure a Linksys Router for Use With a Cable Modem

    • 1). Power down all your computer equipment. Turn off your computer and cable modem. This will ensure proper installation.

    • 2). Unplug your cable modem Ethernet wire from the back of your computer. Leave it in place on the modem then turn your computer back on.

    • 3). Insert the installation software CD into your computer and follow the onscreen instructions. All instructions will vary depending on the model of Linksys router you have purchased. The instructions will prompt you to create a security code and password to keep your wireless connection protected.

    • 4). Plug the modem's Ethernet wire into the Ethernet port on the router, which is labeled "Internet." This plug will be yellow.

    • 5). Plug the blue Ethernet cable provided with the Linksys router into the blue Ethernet port labeled "Ethernet 1." Plug the other end of the wire into your computer's Ethernet port.

    • 6). Plug the router's power cord into the back of the router first, then plug it into a wall socket or power receptacle. Read the instructions on your computer screen and wait for the router to be configured. The installation wizard will notify you when your connection is successful.

    • 7). Turn on your cable modem, then unplug the blue Ethernet cable from both the router and the computer. Your modem and computer should now be configured for wireless Internet connectivity.
