Melissa Claire Egan on the Billy-Victoria-Chelsea Triangle & her Wedding
As fashion designer Chelsea Lawson on The Young and the Restless, Melissa Claire Egan has very little family and fewer friends. But her real life is 180 degrees opposite of Chelsea. The Pound Ridge, New York-born Egan, who previously played Annie McDermott on All My Children, is marrying her fiancé Matt Katrosar on Saturday, July 26 in front of 200 family members and friends.
Even with her wedding just a week away, Egan turned up at the CBS party during the Television Critics Association press tour and spoke to Soaps.About.com about the Chelsea-Billy-Victoria triangle; how in real life she and Amelia Heinle, who plays Victoria, are good friends; what it's like to play opposite three different Billys in a short space of time; and some scoop on her wedding.
Chelsea doesn't know that Adam is alive. So do you think she is serious about Billy or he is just a boy toy for her?
I think it is a little bit of both. As I always say, a girl's got to eat. She's been lonely for a while. She was madly in love with her husband, who in her mind is gone. He's dead. She's raising the baby alone. She's sad, she's lonely and, I think, she's feeling lonely and loves the comfort of a man. I think she's always had something going with Billy. There has always been some kind of chemistry and attraction between them, so I think it's a little bit of both. Also, it's a lot of loneliness after she had the fairy tale and lost it.
There's been three different actors playing Billy in a very short period of time. Is that hard for you as an actress, or is that re-energizing to play off someone new?
It's always new and fresh. All the men are amazing, talented and different in their own right. It definitely brings a new energy every time there is a new Billy. It is also just a part of this medium.
It happens all the time. People always ask me if doing love scenes is difficult. I always say, "You get used to it." They say, "When they recast, is it difficult?" I say, "No, you get used to it." You roll with the punches. So truly, it's like when you meet a new person and you have a sex scene, it's like, "Okay." You truly don't over think it. You just keep moving forward, keep going, and think positively. You just get used to it essentially in this media.
Chelsea has lost her husband and her best friend Chloe is gone. Who does she get to do girlfriend stuff with now?
I want to say Victoria, but we hate each other on the show, but I love Amelia off the show. Chelsea is in a very lonely place. She lost her husband and she lost her best friend within months of each other. She is really in a lonely, sad place. She is down-and-out on her luck for now, but on The Young and the Restless that is kind of a good place to be because who knows what she is capable of. There is really no girlfriend; she has no friends right now. Connor is her friend right now. He is one, but he listens and he doesn't talk back.
But her career is at a high?
She just left for Forrester for a couple of weeks for a great trip to work on her line, because I am going on my honeymoon in real life, so that's why I'm leaving.
When are you getting married?
I am getting married next Saturday, July 26. So her career is like life in general: When certain things are at a high other things are at a low. Her career is kicking butt, but her personal life is a mess.
Is your fiancé an actor?
No. He works for CBS Sports, but on the business side.
Are you having a big wedding?
About 200 people.
What are your colors?
My bridesmaids are in a rich green, called Rich Peacock. It is a really beautiful green. My colors are greens, blues and purple. Hydrangeas are my flowers.
And your dress?
You'll see.
