- 1). Contact your insurance company. The best way to do this is to call your agent or a customer service representative and inform him that you want to cancel your policy. This allows you to ask any questions you may have about the cancellation process. Let your agent know the exact cancellation date and inquire about any possible charges or refunds.
- 2). Fill out the cancellation request form that your insurance company sends you. They may have a form available online, or you might have to wait for it to arrive via U.S. mail.
- 3). Send the completed cancellation request form back to your insurance company. Make a follow-up call to ensure that they received the form.
- 4). Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles and inform them that you have canceled your insurance. You may be required to turn in your license plate if you have not purchased a policy from another insurance company.
