About the planetarium
The Chennai Birla Planetarium was constructed in 1988. It is dedicated to the well-known industrialist and visionary Mr. B.M. Birla. It is regarded as the highly developed and modernized planetarium in India.
The Birla Planetarium is an essential branch of the Periyar Science & Technology Center. PSTC is a premier institute of Tamil Nadu, in South India.
The Museum houses eight galleries including Electronics and Communication, Physical Science, Life Science, Energy, Transport, Innovation, Material Science and International Dolls.
Planetarium Attractions
The main attractive aspect of this Planetarium at Chennai is the charisma of the stylish and refined GM II Projector present there. Discussions and workshops are piloted by the scientists eminent in astronomy in the seminar hall, studio. This classroom studio is fully air-conditioned and entirely computerized. It can hold 236 people.
Features of the studio
At the Birla Planetarium there are audio and visual programs carried out on different aspects of astronomy. These programs are very easy for the visitors to follow. The projector that exists inside the classroom provides special effects on the inner dome that penetrates through the Planetarium. The inner dome is made from aluminum.
Birla Planetarium seems to be an indoor universe that is the entire universe brought inside with the astronomical wonder re-erected on the specifically punctured aluminum inner auditorium. These visual shows merely carry you all the way through the space.
It hosts regular thrilling enlightening shows related to astronomy. School authorities charter bus rentals and bring their school students for an educational tour to space at this Planetarium. This place offers an exceptional education opportunity for ecologists and students.

Timings of the shows
The Shows at the Planetarium are carried out in Tamil and English.
€ The Tamil show timings are at noontime and at 2:30 pm. Monday is a holiday for Tamil show only.
€ The English shows are conducted at 10:45 am, at 1:15 pm and at 3:45 pm.
€ On second Saturday there are special shows carried out at night. The sky observation at night is approved by the Birla Planetarium from late evening 7 pm - 9 pm.
€ Birla Planetarium stays open daily apart from National Holidays from morning 10 am to evening 5:45 pm.
How to reach the Planetarium?
The Kotturpuram railway station is very close to the Birla Planetarium. If you buy bus ticket and travel then you can get down at the Kottupuram bus stop, which is very near to the Planetarium.
