Internet has become a staple in many homes and offices around the world. There are many Internet providers to choose from, all with different package options and speed capabilities. Before committing to one specific DSL provider, make sure that your computer has the required modem requirements to handle the job properly. - Currently, most DSL systems require an updated operating system. Windows Vista, Windows 95/98/ME/XP or Windows NT 4.0/2000 is often the requirements to run DSL with a PC. If you have a Mac, you will need a Mac OS System 7.5 or later.
- A CD-ROM drive is often required so that you can install any software that is provided by your chosen DSL provider.
- Each DSL provider will require different processing speeds. For example, AT&T requires a PC to have 133MHz Processor and 32 MB of RAM to use their DSL services. Mac users must have 16 MB of RAM and PowerPC 100 MHz or faster to work efficiently.
- Your hard drive should have at least 100 MB to be able to properly install DSL. This is the requirement for a Mac and a PC.
- DSL runs off your phone line. You do not need to install a second phone line, but you do have to have a household that is equipped with at least one phone line.
- An Ethernet network interface card (NIC) is also needed for both Mac and PC. Your computer probably already is equipped with one of these. Check the list of peripherals for your computer to make sure you have this. You can purchase this and install it yourself or have a professional do this for you.
- Check with your local providers to make sure that you live in an area that will get adequate coverage. Some areas will not get enough bandwidth to obtain the desired speeds for their DSL to work efficiently.
- Your modem will be provided by your chosen carrier. You can either pick them up from designated electronic stores to install yourself or you can choose to have it shipped through the mail and follow the instructions provided. There is also the option to have a professional install it for you, although this can get expensive.
