If you're a boat enthusiast, you can take great satisfaction if you build it yourself. There are a wide range of boat building kits in existence that will help you make the desired model which can float or just be displayed. Below you have a few steps about how to build a boat with a small amount of work.

1) A perfect way to build a boat is to use a model skiff from which you can learn the basics of constructing a model boat. After you have the right plans you can start building the boat. The first step is to crop the templates from the plans you have and trace them onto the balsa wood.

2) Identify the different parts of your model. This parts should include at least two sides, the base of the boat, the back panel, center struts and gunwales. The gunwales represent the upper edge around the outside of the boat.

3) Cut the wood in order to obtain the parts of the boat. You can use an utilility knife or circular fabric for more precise cuts.

4) The two sides of the boat must be joined together at the prow. The latter is the "nose" of the boat where the two sides of the boat glued together produce a V-shape in the balsa wood.

5) Curve the wood in order to produce the shape of the boat by gluing the center struts in place. Using an elastic band slowly bend the back. Loop the elastic band around the outside of the back of the boat, about an inch from the end. Introduce a long piece of balsa wood inside the elastic loop and start rotating it until the shape of the boat is created. Place the piece of the balsa wood on the inner strut to hold it in place while the glue dries.

6) Take off the elastic band while you hold the boat together. The aft, or back of the boat must be glued together with the back panel.

7) Attach the gunwales to the sides of the boat by gluing them. They need to be clamped in order to maintain the curves of the boat. This must be done gently to avoid breaking the wood.

8) Glue the bottom with the base of the boat and clamp the boat together.

9) Polish up the edges of the boat and paint it in order to give it a more refined look. Your boat is ready to display after it dries.
