How to Refinish Espresso Furniture
- 1). Move the espresso furniture to a ventilated area, away from other items. Lay down plastic drop cloths and cover them with heavy-duty fabric coverings. Place the esspresso furniture on the drop cloths.
- 2). Sand off the varnish topcoat using 120-grit sandpaper. Sand along with the wood grain until the finish appears dull.
- 3). Wipe sawdust from the sanded furniture with tack cloths.
- 4). Cover portions of furniture you do not want stained with professional painter's tape.
- 5). Apply a fresh coat of espresso stain to the furniture, using a paintbrush manufactured for use with oil-based coatings. Wait 2 hours for the stain to dry. Add more coats for darker results.
- 6). Wash the brush with mineral spirits.
- 7). Wait a full 24 hours. Apply varnish to the stained furniture, using the clean brush. Wait 8 hours before using the furniture.
