- 1). Move the dresser to an area with adequate ventilation. Remove all hardware and clean the dresser with mild soap and water. Let the dresser dry thoroughly.
- 2). Sand all surfaces of the dresser with coarse sandpaper, followed by fine sandpaper. Sand the dresser in the direction of the grain of the wood and use a tack cloth to remove dust.
- 3). Use a large paintbrush to prime large areas of the dresser, followed by sponges or smaller brushes for tight areas. Paint the dresser using large and small brushes to cover both large areas and tight areas. Allow the primer and paint to completely dry between applications.
- 4). Refurbish hardware by lightly sanding to remove flaky paint. If the drawer pulls are made of wood, Fresh Home suggests screwing them into a piece of thick cardboard before spray-painting.
- 5). Buy stencils or create your own by printing out free online stencils onto card-stock paper. Tape stencils to the dresser with drafting tape. Paint the stencils in contrasting or complementary colors to the background dresser color. Leave the stencils in place until the paint has thoroughly dried.
- 6). Create a different look with decoupage. Use gift-wrap or images from books or magazines to create interest. Lay your images out on the dresser to determine placement. Apply a layer of Mod Podge glue (it contains a sealer and finish) to the dresser where the images will go. Apply the image, following it with another layer of Mod Podge over the image. Press out air bubbles before the Mod Podge dries. If a bubble occurs, use a utility or X-Acto knife to cut a small hole in the bubble. Gently lift the paper and apply a small amount of Mod Podge to the underside with a paintbrush and press down in place. Reapply a second coat of Mod Podge after the first coat dries.
- 7). Reattach the refurbished drawer pulls or attach new hardware.
