    • 1). Shut off the water supply for the toilet where you want to replace the flapper. The water supply valve can be found behind the toilet, mounted on the wall. Rotate the the knob to the right until the knob stops.

    • 2). Remove the lid from the tank. Press the handle and flush the tank. Continue holding the handle until the water inside runs out.

    • 3). Unhook the flapper chain from the flush handle rod.

    • 4). Remove the flapper. There are two main ways that the flapper will be installed in the toilet: either secured to the overflow tube or in hinges on the bowl gasket. To remove a flapper from the overflow tube, simply slide it up and off the tube. Snap out the flapper attached to the gasket.

    • 5). Turn the new flapper over. Apply a thin coat of silicone grease to the underside of the rim.

    • 6). Install the new flapper. Connect the flapper chain to the flush lever.

    • 7). Restore the water supply. Allow the toilet to fill. Flush the toilet and check for proper operation of the flapper.
