How to Kill Ants Cheaply

    Hot Water

    • 1). Place a gallon of water into a large pot and bring it to a boil over high heat.

    • 2). Remove the pot from the heat and stir in a quarter cup of liquid dish detergent. Use a spoon to stir it to combine.

    • 3). Pour the soap mixture slowly over any visible ant hills. The hot water scalds any ants it comes in contact with and kills them. The soap kills any ants that escape the scalding water. When pouring the water, do so slowly to allow it to seep into the ground and not pool on the surface.

    Vinegar

    • 1). Place half a cup of vinegar into a plastic spray bottle. You can use white distilled vinegar or cider vinegar, whichever you have on hand.

    • 2). Add a cup of water to the spray bottle. Place the lid on the bottle and shake the contents to combine.

    • 3). Spray your vinegar mixture on any ants you see to kill them. Also spray the paths they use to enter your home. This covers the scent trail that ants leave for their fellow ants to follow.

    Boric Acid

    • 1). Clean the inside of a small glass baby food jar with soap and water. Allow the jar to dry completely.

    • 2). Use a hammer and nail to make four holes in the top of the jar's lid. Hammer the nail through and remove it to leave the hole.

    • 3). Place 2 tbsp. boric acid and a cup of powdered sugar in a small bowl and mix it together. Boric acid is a common cleaning agent found in laundry detergent. You can find it for sale in the cleaning aisle of your local grocery store.

    • 4). Place half the boric acid mix into the baby food jar. Place the lid on the jar and place the jar in areas the ants frequent. Ants are attracted by the sweetness of the powdered sugar. When the ants enter the jar to get the sugar, the sugar-and-boric-acid mixture sticks to their bodies and they take it back to the nest, where the boric acid kills the ants.
