Auto Repaint Preparation
- 1). Remove any detachable elements of your car that you do not want painted. Peel off any bumper stickers and remove the mirrors and antenna.
- 2). Sand away any areas of rust or corrosion. Lightly rub with 400-grit sandpaper just until the rust is gone and the surface is smooth.
- 3). Remove any sticky or grimy areas with a commercial linseed oil-based "goo" remover. Linseed oil-based substance removers will not damage the exterior of your car or leave a hard-to-remove residue.
- 4). Wash your car thoroughly with a diluted mixture of automotive soap and water. Pay particular attention to any areas treated with "goo" remover. Allow the car to air dry thoroughly, at least 12 hours.
- 5). Fill any cracks or dents with a commercial auto filler, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the filler to dry thoroughly.
- 6). Sand the entire exterior of the car with a 320-grit sandpaper, until the surface goes from glossy to matte. Follow the 320-grit paper with a light sanding with 400-grit paper.
- 7). Cover the tires, windshield and any other areas which should not be painted with painter's tape and pieces of drop-cloth.
